Emergency Department Director

The Director of the Emergency Department provides both clinical and administrative leadership within the field of emergency medicine. The role is responsible for implementing the organization’s vision, mission, and standards within the Emergency Department (ED). This includes ensuring high-quality patient care, overseeing staff, and managing department resources effectively.
Key Responsibilities for the Emergency Department
- Participate in nursing and organizational policy formulation and decision-making.
- Accept organizational accountability for services provided to patients.
- Evaluate the quality and appropriateness of care in the ED.
- Provide supervision, guidance, and performance evaluations for ED staff.
- Coordinate nursing services with other healthcare disciplines.
- Lead recruitment, selection, and retention efforts for ED personnel.
- Manage staffing and scheduling to ensure adequate coverage.
- Ensure proper orientation, credentialing, and ongoing professional development for all staff.
- Develop, monitor, and manage the department's budget.
- Encourage and participate in research activities to evaluate and improve nursing practices.
- Foster an environment conducive to educational experiences for nursing and other healthcare students.
- Maintain oversight of the hospital’s trauma program, ensuring compliance with state requirements.
- Ensure compliance with all relevant laws, regulations, and internal policies.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Essential Skills and Qualifications
- Current RN license in Iowa or a compact state nursing license allowing practice in Iowa.
- Current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS).
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certifications within 6 months of hire.
- Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) certification within 1 year of hire.
- 3-5 years of related clinical practice.
- Minimum of 1-2 years in a clinical leadership role.
- Baccalaureate degree in Nursing or a related field, or an Associate Degree in Nursing with equivalent competencies and enrollment in a baccalaureate program.
- Effectively communicate with patients, visitors, associates, and other stakeholders.
- Resolve customer complaints quickly and efficiently.
- Possess strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to motivate staff.
- Proficient in data collection, analysis, and presentation.
- Knowledgeable in Word Processing, PowerPoint, and Excel.
- Exhibit strong orientation to deadlines and attention to detail.
- Make sound decisions under pressure.
- Manage a diverse and demanding workload effectively.
- Lead public speaking engagements and training sessions.
